AIRCRAFT GLASS SURFACE FINISHING This order from Pilkington Aerospace gave Caltherm their first opportunity to use the Drawing Office 3D modelling skills. The order, for two glass heat treatment furnaces, required a complex material system handling in a compact vertical arrangement.
Drawing the plant in 3D allowed all parties - the customer, design team and the workshop engineers - to visualise the whole plant before build commenced. By displaying different layers of the drawing various parts of the furnace can be seen, for example, the frame, the drive and the conveyor system, and the infra-red element system.

The furnaces are used to process glass via electric infra-red elements in either side of the furnace wall at up to 850°C. Temperature uniformity is improved by a variable speed fan mounted through the roof of the furnace.

Glass components are lifted individually into the furnace on a variable-speed motor-driven chain hoist. The whole furnace is mounted on a frame to raise it by 2.5m. With operator gates below, the furnace is manually loaded, the glass being lifted through two pneumatic doors. The whole furnace operation is controlled and sequenced by an NT-based PC SCADA system operating via Eurotherm instrumentation. Temperature control is held accurately to set point via thyristors.

Deliver, Install and Commission by Caltherm

To complete the £240,000 package Caltherm delivered and installed and commissioned the first furnace in the West Midlands. The second unit was demonstrated operating in the Caltherm works prior to delivery and installation in South America by Caltherm.
