Alstec, Leicester manufactures military marine machines. Having won a
new contract with the British government, a new oven was needed to ensure curing
reliability of large armatures.
The existing workshop had an overhead crane for handling the machinery being
built, thus a top-loading oven is ideal for easy loading with the crane.
The cylindrical armatures are machined and assembled with windings and resin to
form a complete armature.
The resin needs to be cured for 4 hours at 180°C. The armatures are
lowered into the oven with web lifting belts, sitting on high temperature plastic wheels
in the oven for
support and ease of rotation. A vacuum line is then connected
to the core to extract solvents given off during the curing process.
