Caltherm have recently supplied equipment used for a curing process in the final assembly of pacemakers. Guidant is a world leader in the design and development of cardiovascular medical products. Their devices help patients with heart disease return to active and productive lives. They provide physicians with leading-edge technologies for improved patient management and clinical outcomes.

The Ireland facility has been in operation for six years. Having developed a high level of process expertise over time, the Ireland engineering team recognised that opportunities existed to automate some of the manual processes on the pacemaker and defibrillator lines. The existing curing process for curing devices is a batch oven with humidity control. Guidant asked Caltherm if the same tight tolerance of humidity and temperature could be achieved in a conveyor oven. Joe Franey at Gudant comments: ‘The selection of a curing tunnel was also crucial as it had to provide both temperature and humidity control. Caltherm was selected as the manufacturer of choice, partly due to their proven track record in temperature and humidity control but also due to their willingness to adapt their design to meet Guidant's specific needs’. The original oven above is so successful that Caltherm have built a total of four units totally replacing the batch process.
